Professor Plann’s initial training in theoretical linguistics and
Romance languages led her to explore a number of different areas in the
course of her career, including Spanish linguistics, applied
linguistics, historical grammar, second language acquisition, the
interface between second language acquisition and language pedagogy,
and service learning. Her training in linguistics also led to an
interest in minority language communities. One research focus is the
Spanish Deaf community, which she views as a linguistic minority,
comparable to other minority language communities such as Basques,
Catalans, and Galicians. Her widely acclaimed research on Spanish Deaf
history has been supported by a grant from the Fulbright International
Exchange of Scholars; she has also held the Powerie Doctor Chair for
Research on Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
Professor Plann’s interest in minority language communities is also at
the heart of her current research, which focuses on the Arabic speaking
community in Spain.
Another of Professor Plann’s passions is service learning. In 2002 she
was Principal Investigator on a Ford Foundation Faculty Affinity Group
Grant for developing courses with service learning. More recently, she
was awarded a grant from the UCLA Center for Community Partnerships to
create a Spanish language after-school program for African American
elementary school children in Los Angeles. She was recently honored for
her many contributions to service and community-based learning when she
received the UCLA Fair and Open Campus Environment Award, and in 2009 she
won the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor
Plann’s current teaching interests include topics such as second
language acquisition, the interface between SLA and language pedagogy,
service learning, and the use of service learning to promote second
language acquisition.
