THE ONLINE PLACEMENT EXAM
Students will log on to the Placement exam through CCLE using their BOL ID and password. The exam is timed and they will have exactly 90 minutes to complete the exam. This part of the exam does not need to be scheduled, it can be completed from any computer or from home. Please click on the link below for detailed instructions.
(This is not for students trying to satisfy foreign language requirements for majors at UCLA; this is only for those students wishing to satisfy the College foreign language requirement by examination, without taking a class.)
Students who wish to meet the College foreign language requirement by examination are required to take the placement exam, a written exam, and an oral exam. Students will first take the online placement exam through CCLE (please see the section above for instructions on this part). Those who test into Spanish 4 or higher, or Portuguese 27, are eligible to take the written and oral proficiency exams.
After placing into Spanish 4 or higher or Portuguese 27, students may then register for the written proficiency examination. If the written exam is passed, then the student will be contacted to set up a one-on-one appointment for the oral proficiency exam. Once again, you only need to take the written and oral proficiency exams if you are attempting to pass out of the College foreign language requirement without taking a class; you do not take these if you placed below Spanish 4 or if just want to be placed into the appropriate Spanish level.
The written exam will consist of one complex essay question, in which the student is asked to respond to the prompt with an essay of approximately 120 words, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar that demonstrates competence. The student will be allowed 20 minutes to complete the essay question.
The oral exam will consist of a brief oral interview in which the student is expected to demonstrate the ability to ask and answer questions, discuss him or herself and others in the past, present, and future, as well as express opinions. The oral exam is approximately 5 minutes in length.
