Alumni & Friends
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Welcome to the UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese. I was appointed to the position of department chair in July 1, 2015. Despite a number of faculty losses during the last few years, our graduate and undergraduate programs continue to thrive. We currently have around two hundred majors and an equal of number of minors spread out over the five major and four minor programs we offer. Every year, some five thousand students enroll in our classes. We continue to offer exciting summer study abroad programs in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain. In addition to our large Spanish program, we also have a strong program in Portuguese, and, with the help of external funding, we continue to provide students with the opportunity to study Catalán and Quechua. The department’s graduate programs in Spanish, Portuguese, and Linguistics attract outstanding students from across the country and abroad. Our Ph.D.’s continue to be successful on the job market, with recent placements in tenure-track positions at the University of Puget Sound, College of Idaho, University of Virginia, the University of California, Riverside, and Arizona State University, among others.
Each year the department offers a rich array of scholarly and cultural events. In the fall, we traditionally host our Distinguished Alumni Lecture and in the spring our annual Lois E. Matthews Lecture, in addition to a variety of lectures and symposia throughout the academic year. Our graduate students have been particularly active in this regard, organizing an annual conference that draws speakers from all over the country as well as more specialized activities. Information on upcoming events, which you are most welcome to attend, is available on our website. We also encourage you to read, on our website, our annual newsletter, and our Facebook page which include brief reports on our academic and cultural events, as well as updates on the activities of our faculty, graduate students and alumni.
We invite you to stay in touch and remain involved in the life of the department. We would be delighted to welcome you at any of our lectures, symposia or cultural events. If you have any comments or questions about anything on our website or would like to send us your news or become more involved in the department, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. Your continued participation and support means very much to UCLA and to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
