Women and Servants
Apr 29, 2015 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Women and Servants (1613-14) turns Madrid upside down, as daughters and secretaries outsmart their fathers and masters for the sake of love. Lope’s marvelous comedy depicts a sophisticated urban culture of self-fashioning and social mobility, where creaky notions of honor and vengeance have virtually no place. Recently rediscovered in Madrid’s Biblioteca Nacional, the play emerges from its 400-year sleep with a remarkable freshness: in this world of suave dissimulation and accommodation, those on the bottom make room for their voices and their desires.
