Assignments of Literature, Culture, and Linguistics Courses during the Summer Session

Summer teaching positions are limited. Whereas the Department strives to employ as many TAs as possible during the Summer Sessions, it cannot guarantee that all graduate students will be employed.

Academic Student Employees who teach during the summer enjoy a high degree of independence and, thus, need to be ready to teach autonomously. Special consideration is given,

therefore, to graduate students with at least two years of instructional experience and with an excellent teaching record.

Due to the very limited number of literature, culture, and linguistics courses offered during the summer, only a minimal number of TAs will be assigned to teach SPAN/PORT M35, SPAN 42, and SPAN 44 during the Summer Sessions.

Due to the high level of responsibility involved in the summer teaching of literature, culture, and linguistics courses, and in order to ensure an optimum quality of instruction for our undergraduate students, preference will be given to TAs who have already assisted the same course during the Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters, followed by TAs who have assisted another literature, culture, or linguistics course during the academic year.

Additionally, the Undergraduate Affairs Committee will consider the following criteria: 1) Teaching excellence; 2) Experience with external pedagogical training and inclusive teaching.

In order to ensure that the maximum possible number of TAs benefit from the opportunity of teaching literature, culture, and linguistics courses during the Summer, no repetitions will be allowed. (*Unless courses cannot otherwise be staffed).

The following literature, culture, and linguistics courses are offered during the Summer, and are taught by a TA: i) SPAN/PORT M35; ii) SPAN 42; iii) SPAN 44.

Selection criteria for SPAN/PORT M35: i) Must specialize in the area of Linguistics; ii) Preference will be given to TAs who have assisted SPAN/PORT M35 during the Fall, Winter, or Spring quarter; iii) Priority will be given to TAs who have not taught SPAN/PORT M35 in the previous summer(s); iv) Additionally, the following elements will be weighed in the decision: 1) Three most recent student evaluations, with emphasis on SPAN/PORT M35 evaluations of instruction; 2) Performance report by the instructor of record (when available); 3) Teaching awards; 4) Experience with external pedagogical training, training in inclusive teaching and/or other ongoing professionalization training; 5) Level of technological expertise.
