Manuel Gutiérrez received Ph.D. from UCLA in 2010. He has been a professor of Latin American Literature at Rice University, where he taught Mexican literature. He recently edited a volume of critical essays dedicated to the Mexican film director Arturo Ripstein, titled The Films of Arturo Ripstein: The Sinister Gaze of the World (Palgrave, 2019). He has published articles in Estudios Mexicanos/Mexican Studies, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, and A Contracorriente. He is currently completing a book titled Let us Ignore our Poets: Art Writing in Post-Revolutionary Mexico.
