Nohora Arrieta Fernández wins dissertation award at Georgetown University

Professor Nohora Arrieta Fernández was recently named the recipient of the 2023 Harold N. Glassman Dissertation Award in the Humanities at Georgetown University. In an email to Professor Arrieta, Dean Alexander Sens of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Georgetown stated that “Your work was enthusiastically praised by your Department, mentor, and readers” and added that “Our Graduate School Executive Committee was pleased and proud to confer the award.” The award consisted of a cash payment of $2,500 and a certificate. Professor Arrieta was invited to receive the award in person at Georgetown’s Doctoral Hooding Ceremony on 18 May 2023. She defended her dissertation, titled “Bittersweet Poetics: Aesthetics and Politics of the Sugar Plantation in Brazil and the Caribbean (1990-2018),” which was directed by Professors Joanne Rappaport and Vivaldo Santos, in 2021. Professor Arrieta was a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA from 2021 to 2023 and was appointed Assistant Professor in our department, effective 1 July 2023.
