Study Abroad Resources
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese organizes its own annual faculty-led Summer Travel Study Programs. You do not need to be a major or a minor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese to join these programs.
Courses are available at all levels, from covering basic language requirements to completing upper division electives for our majors and minors. These are regular UCLA courses so they can apply immediately toward your program goals.
Students may begin registering for these programs on November 15th of each year through the International Education Office. Scholarships are available (see below).
Travel Study Scholarships
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese supports undergraduate students interested in immersive cultural and educational experiences abroad with UCLA faculty by providing a limited number of scholarships for students participating in one of the department’s Travel Study programs. The International Education Office also offers scholarships and information on financial aid.
You do not need to be a major or a minor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese to apply for the Department scholarship. All UCLA students are encouraged to apply!

Other Study Abroad Programs
UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP)
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese participates in the system-wide Education Abroad Program (EAP) offered by the University of California, providing long-term study (from one quarter to one year) at participating foreign universities.
Opportunities for study in Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries are available in many countries for students that are majoring or minoring in Spanish or Portuguese. For more information, please consult the EAP website.
For students wishing to count EAP courses towards major or minor requirements, please consult the Study Abroad petitioning guidelines.
UCLA Global Cities – Barcelona
The UCLA Global Cities Program in Barcelona is a new study abroad option for Spanish majors and minors during the summer. This collaboration between Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and UCLA offers students a unique academic and cultural experience that combines credit-bearing courses with special events.
This joint program is comprised of two consecutive sessions. For the first 4 weeks, you will join a selected group of local students at UPF. For the last 6 weeks, the same cohort of students (UCLA + UPF) come to UCLA to attend Summer Session C.
All courses are pre-approved for credit transfer and some courses also meet GE/Diversity requirements (no need for petition). You can find more information at the Global Cities website.
Students may also explore options offered through non-UC-affiliated programs, but should consult with a counselor at the International Education Office to discuss options and procedures for participating in a non-UC study abroad program prior to committing. There are no guarantees for credit transfer approval, which makes consultation critical for students considering alternate programs.
